"Art captures the spirit of the age." These words, emblazoned above the entrance to the "Secession" building in Vienna could serve as a rallying cry for Swiss art in general and for the works of Ferdinand Hodler in particular. A 1904 exhibition of Hodler's works at the "Secession", a shrine to the avant garde, was met by a huge wave of enthusiasm. And now, 90+ years after his first success outside his home country, a retrospective exhibition of his work is being shown in North America where, thanks to his William Tell, Hodler is one of the most well-known Swiss painters.
